FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE

Dear Hari,

The 2017 PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference was outstanding!  With 825 attendees at committee meetings, education sessions, and the annual business meeting, PCI’s successful event in Cleveland is entirely due to you. Throughout this special edition of My PCI Update, dedicated to the convention, you’ll see how much progress PCI is making in all areas including technical, marketing, quality, and education.

This is the second year we’ve held our convention in conjunction with The Precast Show. With 4,405 in attendance, the exhibition itself was a success as well. This year the show was rebranded to reflect the cooperative nature of all stakeholder organizations: the National Precast Concrete Association, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, the Cast Stone Institute, and the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. In anticipation of continued success, PCI has agreed to continue the partnership with The Precast Show through 2021.

We are making progress in all areas of the institute and anticipating continued success partnering with The Precast Show.  While we are always looking for ways to improve (did you complete your post-convention survey, yet?), I think members and staff can agree that PCI is accomplishing great things.

Plant Certification – 50-Years of Excellence
At the convention, PCI recognized the PCI Plant Certification Program as it celebrates its 50-year anniversary in 2017. In addition, plants that have been continuously certified for all 50-years were honored.

The concept of the Plant Certification Program was approved by the PCI Board of Directors in 1958. The first publication of MNL-116, the structural precast concrete quality control manual was in 1966. Since the board wanted a minimum of 25 plants to voluntarily apply to the program in order to fully launch it, it wasn’t until 1967 that 26 companies, operating 35 plants, submitted two-year contracts. Seven of those plants completed the certification process in 1967 and remain PCI-Certified today.

A Welcome Reception for The Precast Show Grand Opening was held Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on the exhibit floor, with food and drinks.

The Women in Precast Reception was attended by over 100 women, and proved to be a great networking opportunity for colleagues and industry professionals. Thank you to our sponsors for hosting the event:

PCI Design Awards Breakfast

The 54th PCI Design Awards were presented in front of 400 attendees. Projects and companies that achieved design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete were recognized. Visit  2016 PCI Design Awards to view all winners and honorable mentions in all categories.

PCI Foundation After Dark

The PCI Foundation “After Dark” fundraiser had record attendance during the PCI Convention in Cleveland. The goal of this event is to allow attendees to meet professors teaching precast programs in conjunction with the PCI Foundation in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. “Talking even a few minutes to some of the professors in our programs gives folks the opportunity to see what a difference we are making in the state of precast concrete education,” says Dean Gwin, chairman of the PCI Foundation.

In addition to enjoying music and cocktails, attendees were able to participate in this year’s silent auction, chaired by Marianne Methven of Hamilton Form and Ray Clark of US Formliner. The silent auction raised about $11,000 and the After Dark event raised another $10,000. The fundraiser was sponsored by BASF, Hamilton Form, and Thermomass.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Networking Event

The annual industry networking bash was held Saturday evening with over 500 attendees. The precast/prestressed concrete industry took over the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with live music, food, drinks, and exploring the museum.

COMMITTEES IN ACTION

Educational Activities Council

The council reported on the successful PCI Online Academy, most recently a Special Inspectors course in partnership with ICC. PCI trained 195 individuals during the Special Inspectors course. An umbrella strategy is underway to organize all of the institute’s education offerings and provide a pipeline to better assist the technical (and other) committees’ tasks to create and promote courses. This work will continue throughout the year and a fully developed plan will be the primary agenda item in the fall.

Membership Committee

The membership committee discussed the My PCI program and its effort to make the membership experience more personal. The My First Year program, where staff and committee members touch base with corporate members throughout their first year of membership, is going well and the inaugural year is almost done. The committee looks forward to the valuable feedback from the first companies that are going through the program. The committee also discussed focusing on member engagement activities and creating a task force to handle member recruitment activities. Prepare for Your Certification Exam with PCI

PCI offers training courses designed to prepare individuals for PCI Personnel Certification examinations throughout the year at our Quality Control Schools. It is important to note that passing an examination satisfies only one of the requirements of personnel certification and the final decision on certification is made independently by the PCI Quality Programs department.

Learn more about certification requirements, including related experience requirements here. Course registration includes all course texts and study materials. You will receive your textbook(s) in the mail with your registration confirmation. Registration information and forms are available on the PCI Website. Registration for each school opens approximately 90 days prior to the start of the school.
